  6. Tom, what determines whether to split a tenon or leave it whole?

  7. Terry-
    great question. Basically it’s the size and application. In this case,
    leaving the tenon full would mean a huge mortise into the foot of the
    table. This would actually weaken the joint, so the tenon was split. In
    some applications, where sheer strength may be a consideration, having the
    split tenon means twice as much glue surface. Again, it depends on the
    individual application. Thanks for the question-

    end of the handle so it looks a bit rugged in this shot. But it’s a 2-in.
    wide Japanese chisel…a real work-horse.
